Canadas largest Ice breaker CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent

The CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent, also known as NGCC Louis S. St-Laurent, is a highly advanced heavy icebreaker that serves under the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG). As the largest icebreaker in the CCG fleet, Louis S. St-Laurent boasts of cutting-edge features and technologies that make it an efficient and reliable vessel for icebreaking operations. The ship is based in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, which serves as its home port.

One of the key components that make Louis S. St-Laurent a formidable icebreaker is its Woodward-based power management system. The Canadian Coast Guard has entrusted the Madsen Controls & Engineering group to upgrade the ship’s generators, which includes 3 MAK 900kW ship service generators and 5 MAK 5.1MW propulsion generators. To achieve this, the ship is equipped with state-of-the-art technologies such as Woodward 733 for engine control, easYgen-3500-XT-P2 for generator control, and LS-5 V.2 for the MG set and shore power.

Moreover, the ship’s power management system is further enhanced with Wago processors for I/O expansion, redundant networks, and HMIs. These features ensure that the ship’s operations are optimized, and its power management system functions efficiently, even in extreme weather conditions. With this advanced power management system, the CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent is capable of breaking through the thickest ice and navigating the harshest weather conditions, making it an indispensable asset for the Canadian Coast Guard.
