The Belo Monte hydroelectric dam, boasting a nameplate capacity of 11GW, is currently the 5th largest hydro dam in the world. Commissioned in 2016, the plant features 18 turbines with a capacity of 611MW each and an additional 6 turbines with a capacity of 39MW. Utilizing conventional storage technology, the dam is owned and operated by Norte Energia SA.
Located in the Região Geográfica Intermediária de Altamira, Pará, Brazil, the Belo Monte hydroelectric plant is situated on the Rio Xingu. Each generator of the plant’s turbines is paralleled with 2 Woodward SPM-D2-Yb units used in 1.5 channel synchronization mode. The first SPM-D2-Yb unit is activated for paralleling while the second SPM-D2-Yb unit performs Synchcheck.
